Italian Provider for Residential VoIP Services

Acme Packet announced that Wind Telecomunicazioni has deployed the Net-Net session border controllers to support its new residential VoIP offering. Wind’s VoIP service promises a unique, user-friendly consumer experience and will be available to potentially 80% of Italy’s population. The Net-Net SBCs are elements of an Alcatel-Lucent triple-play deployment and IP network transformation program announced in October 2006.

“In order to deliver a market-differentiating VoIP offering in the growing market for IP services, we required a solution that assures premium voice quality while at the same time protecting our network,” said Jere Calmes, Wind’s Chief Operating Officer. “Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs deliver the functionality we required with carrier-class performance and reliability while interoperating with the myriad of devices in our network and our customers’ homes.”

The Net-Net SBCs are deployed in over 20 points of presence (PoPs) delivering simultaneous SIP and H.323 signaling and interworking between the two protocols. The broad signaling support in addition to Acme Packet’s unique adaptive hosted NAT traversal allows Wind to maximize its service reach in a non-disruptive manner. The Net-SAFE security architecture provides topology hiding, access control and denial of service (DoS) attack prevention, ensuring the availability and quality of Wind’s VoIP services. The SBCs also perform call admission control using flexibly defined local policies to assure service quality and network availability.

“Wind is delivering compelling new IP interactive communication services to the Italian market,” said Seamus Hourihan, Acme Packet’s vice president of marketing and product management. “Acme Packet is playing a key role in ensuring that those services reach the maximum number of customers and are delivered with premium quality. In addition, our Net-SAFE architecture protects Wind’s core VoIP network from attacks, ensuring that the network is available to serve customers.”
