Combining WiFi, Skype, and Free!

TechNewsWorld released an article about how Skype (a free online voice over net service) and Broadreach Networks (who provides WiFi hotpots in the UK) are teaming up to offer free hotspot calls in the UK.

Though mobile WiFi VoIP is nowhere nearly as robust as a typical cell-phone you can bet it will be one day.

Vonage experiences outage

Vonage dropped the ball on Friday. Apparently they had a few glitches after performing an upgrade the night before. Though this is a very common problem with performing software updates I am sure the 250,000 customers who had no services for roughly 45 minutes will not take much comfort in that fact!

Hopefully this little "ball dropping" by Vonage wont turn others away from VoIP.

FCC fines VoIP blocking telco

I know its all over the news but in case you haven't heard the FCC tracked down and investigated the complaints made by Vonage and Nuvia that their customers using Voice Over Internet were being blocked. Apparently roughly 200 customers were unable to even make emergency calls. Luckily for our country the FCC was quick to move and charge the offending company a warning and fine, other countries are not as fortunate. What I find confusing though is some news articles report the offending company (Madison River Communications) as a telco and some a broadband provider and though they do provide phone and DSL services, it would have been helpful for someone to mention this.

VoIP Inc. Acquires 1-800-TALKTIME Brand

VoIP Inc. announced that it purchased the 1-800-TALKTIME registered trademark and other assets from Creative Marketing Associates, Inc. The terms of the Asset Purchase Agreement were not disclosed.

"VoIP, Inc. is committing substantial financial resources to promoting our new brand," said Steven Ivester, CEO of VoIP Inc. "1-800-TALKTIME is the brand that will be used for a new retail voice-over-IP, subscriber-based telephone service, competing head-to-head with the likes of Vonage and AT&T's CallVantage. Until now there has not been a true brand connection to VOIP service. Just like Kleenex, Xerox, Coke, Clorox, Windex and other household names, 1-800-TALKTIME will become the name synonymous with VOIP services.
