The $190 billion US fixed-line telephony market is up for grabs with cable companies, ISPs, Internet portals and pure-play VoIP providers all lining up to take a share of what has traditionally been the Telco's bread and butter. The companies that control the broadband connections are likely to come out on top.

Vonage: Nearly 80 Percent of U.S. Subscriber Lines Have E911

Vonage America Inc., a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., a leading Internet telephony provider, announced that nearly 80 percent of its U.S. subscriber lines now have Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number -- and that it is continuing to quickly equip new counties across the nation with E911 everyday.

For the past six months, Vonage has been turning up on average over 112 calling centers in more than 45 new counties each week. Over the past two weeks, Vonage equipped an additional 260 calling centers in over 45 new counties with E911 -- bringing the total number of calling centers across the nation with emergency service to over 4300.

VoIP Provider Skype Drives Down Cost of Phone Service

With the launching of its Skype-for-Business service, Luxembourg-based VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) provider Skype Technologies is allowing small businesses to leverage voice-mail and off-network calling and to link multiple accounts through a control panel, reports CMP Media's VARBusiness.

The feature "Got Skype?" which appears in the April 17, 2006, issue of the biweekly magazine that covers the business of technology integration, notes that nearly 300 million people now are calling one another anywhere in the world for free, without a microphone and speakers or a headset connected to a computer, by using the provider. Skype could have a huge impact by further driving down the cost of phone service and by easing the integration of telephones and its network via new wares.

VoIP Awareness on the Rise in Great Britain and United States

Over the course of nine months, the percentage of British adults who say they have heard of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or already make telephone calls via an Internet connection increased from just a little over one-third (37%)(1) to nearly half (46%). A similar shift in awareness and use in the United States has been displayed (36%(2) vs. 51%).

These are some of the findings from a Harris Interactive survey measuring VoIP awareness and usage conducted online from October 12 to 16, 2005 among 1,089 U.S. adults aged 18 and over and 1,117 British adults aged 18 and over.

XO Comm. Tops 2.9 Billion Minutes of VoIP Traffic in First Quarter

XO Communications announced that it carried more than 2.9 billion minutes of voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic across its nationwide IP network in the first quarter of 2006, a 32 percent increase over the previous quarter. The increase was driven by greater deployment of XO's VoIP solutions by businesses and service providers, demonstrating the increasing growth of delivering voice services over an all IP environment.
