Packet8 Subscribers Receive Nationwide E911 Services

8x8 has successfully provisioned nomadic E911 emergency calling throughout its network of domestic residential and business Packet8 subscribers.

Effective immediately, all Packet8 subscribers with a U.S. service address can now contact emergency service personnel by dialing 911 from their Packet8 phone. Previously, Packet8 offered E911 service as an optional feature to subscribers, however, earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission issued an order requiring all interconnected VoIP providers to provide E911 capabilities to their subscribers as a standard component of their service.

FCC E911 Deadline Looms for VoIP Service Providers

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) won't require Internet phone service providers to disconnect customers who don't have reliable 911 emergency call service (E911).

The FCC issued a notice late Monday said, "providers that have not achieved full 911 compliance by Nov. 28, will not be forced to discontinue such service to any existing customers."

At the same time, the FCC expects providers to discontinue marketing their Internet call service and accepting new customers in areas where the companies are not routing 911 calls to emergency response centers, even if the subscribers would have access to "basic" 911 service.

Falcon Broadband Chooses General Bandwidth for Voice over IP Deployment

General Bandwidth, a leading Voice over IP (VoIP) equipment manufacturer enabling rapid deployment and new service revenue generation over broadband networks, has been selected by Falcon Broadband, a fiber-to-the-premises, cable, and wireless service provider based in Colorado, to enable the launch of its SIP-based Voice over IP (VoIP) service offering.
